AUGUST 2018

  • Saturday, August 11
    9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. A full country breakfast will energize you for an early paddle. $65 (Overnight guests: $50) We welcome paddlers 12 years-old & up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.

SEPTEMBER 2018

  • Labor Day, Monday, September 3rd
    3:30 – 6:00 p.m. This holiday paddle sums up summer…relaxing, beautiful, and as tranquil as the drifting tide. When we get back to the dock, we offer wine and hors d’oeuvres to enjoy in the cooling breeze and lovely late summer light. $60. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.

    9:00 – 11:00 a.m. A big 8.2 foot tide lets us wander by kayak over the marshes for close-up views of coastal wild life. Sumptuous Sunday brunch follows. $65 inclusive. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old & up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.

    2:15 – 4:15 p.m. Afternoon kayaking with wine and delicious snacks served afterward at the dock. $60. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
  • Autumnal Equinox, Saturday, September 22nd
    7:30 – 9:30 a.m. Let’s celebrate the changing season with a gorgeous sunrise kayak trip and a wonderful Dunham Farms breakfast following docking. $60 We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
    6:15 p.m. Enjoy the huge harvest moon as it rises over the glittering tall fall tide while we sit on the bluff sipping wine and munching delicious snacks. $10

  • Harvest Moon Weekend October 6-8

      11:00 a.m. Forest conservation walk through Dunham’s lovely woods. Free.
    • Sunday, October 7th
      8:00 – 10:00 a.m. A gorgeous morning kayak trip on a tall 8.2 foot tide. You’ll be especially hungry for the Dunham Farms' Sunday Brunch that follows. $65 inclusive. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
      3:00 – 5:00 p.m. American Indian history explored at the Retreat. It’s part of our conservation effort for our nearly 10,000 acres and its cultural and environmental history. We’ll talk about what’s been accomplished and about future archaeological plans. This is the first in our Wine and Conservation Series that includes a small plate dinner at 6:00 p.m. in Live Oak Hall. $30
    • Monday, October 8th: Columbus Day Holiday
      9:00 – 11:00 p.m. The tide is enormous and we’ll be able to explore the hidden coves and beaches around the basin via kayak. It is fun indeed and we’ll hope to sight hidden wildlife along the way. Brunch afterwards. $65. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.

      • 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Start the fun with a midday paddle with lunch. $60 We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
      • 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. Afternoon plantation discovery walk
      • 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Reception at the barn
      • 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Small plate dinners by reservation. $25
    • Sunday, November 11th
      • 11:15 – 1:15 p.m. Kayak. $50. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
      • 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Veteran’s Day Lunch. $20 reservations required
      • 2:30 p.m. Nature’s War: Hurricanes….What happened on the coast? How accurate are forecasts? What to expect? We’ll walk the grounds to assess the damage from the last two big ones. What was the biggest and most dangerous one? What can you do?
  • Saturday, November 17th
    10:00 – 1:00 p.m. Get ready for Christmas. (Great crafts and kid’s event). Meet at the Melon Bluff Nature Center, 2999 Islands Highway, about 3 miles east of exit 76, the Midway-Sunbury exit on I-95. We’ll walk trails to collect big pine cones for decorating. Then we’ll have a picnic at the hilltop viewing tower overlooking heritage rice fields. There’s a big, beautiful meadow for games and a wagon hay ride back to the Nature Center. Great way to experience the outdoors. $12, reservations required

    If you are staying at Dunham Farms B&B, ask for information on the Leonids Meteor shower that peaks tonight. The dock provides exceptional viewing under a dark sky, a sky which N.O.A.H. claims is one of the few dark areas left on the coast.

  • Full Moon Weekend: November 24-25
    • Saturday, November 24th
      10:00 – 5:00 p.m. Pre-holiday 10% off gift shop sale for Saturday and Sunday. Snacks, wine, coffee and soft drinks are available.
      8:15 – 11:15 a.m. Extended kayak trip at dawn on a huge 8.6 foot tide that exposes hidden coves and lets us paddle over shallow waters to distant hammocks. Great fun and a special pleasure to discover the Low Country’s mysterious beauty. $55 We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
      6:52 p.m. Sit out on the bluff with a glass of wine while you watch the harvest moon rise at your feet. Spectacular! And yes, the best things in life are free.
    • Sunday, November 25th
      10:00 a.m. – 12;00 p.m. An enormous tide opens up secret wonders of coastal creeks and marshes to our kayaks. Enjoy lunch when we return. $60 We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.

DECEMBER

  • 8th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights and Music: Saturday, December 1st
    As always you can expect wonderful holiday music, good food and lavish Christmas decorations. The festival is an annual favorite and a time to revisit the spirit of Christmas before the commercial rush begins. It is a place for family and friends to reconnect, for new friends to be made and for everyone to share in the laughter, beauty and true joy of the season. Tables seat 10 – 11 and this year as you reserve, please name those with whom you wish to be seated.

    Schedule
    • 4:30 – 6:45 p.m. Wagons leave the parking lot every 15 minutes and circle the grounds, stopping at the Live Oak Hall, Gift Shop, The Barn, the historic cottage, Live Oak Hall again and return to the parking lot. Wagon rides resume at 8:00 p.m. with the last run at 9:45 p.m.
    • 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Musical wine hour in Live Oak Hall
    • 6:00 p.m. Tree lighting on the lawn by Live Oak Hall
    • 6:15 p.m. Traditional candle ceremony on the river
    • 6:45 p.m. Concert by the Holiday Harmonies in Live Oak Hall
    • 7:15 – 8:00 p.m. Festival banquet with encores
    • 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. The wagons will take you around the grounds with stops at the cottage and the Gift Shop. (Big holiday sale!) They also stop on the bluff for coffee and to roast s’mores at the fire pit.

  • Friday, December 14th
    • 1:45 – 3:45 p.m. Kayaking is a great way to show off the Low Country to friends and family from out of state. Our paddle today traces the colonial plantations that were original European settlements. We’ll also talk about American Indian settlements. Spanish missions and other fascinating glimpses into our past. $50. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
    • Stay overnight and enjoy Dunham Farms’ plantation specialties for dinner. $50. Games and movies then sleep peacefully until another gorgeous dawn.
  • Saturday, December 15th
    • 10:00 – 5:00 p.m. Don’t miss the big pre-Christmas sale in the Dunham Farms gift shop.
    • 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. Run away from the holiday madness. Take a moment to embrace the tranquility of water lapping around your kayak as you cruise through the marsh under an amazing arc of sky. $50. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
    • 6:30 p.m. Reserve supper and a plantation tour if you wish. We would love to share this escape with you. $25.
  • Friday, December 21st
    • 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. Celebrate the Winter Solstice with this stunning sunrise kayak adventure. The tide will be enormous to double our ability to explore the property we’ve put into permanent conservation. We’ll show you how and why we are preserving this coastal treasure for you and for the generations to come. $50. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
  • Saturday, December 22nd
    8:00 –10:00 a.m. Merry Christmas Paddle. Come join us. Then we’ll have a mid-morning champagne toast (Just one) to send you safely on your way. And don’t forget that last minute gift or two during today’s final day of the gift shop sale. $50 We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
  • 18th Annual Holiday for Hermits: December 26 – 30

    Wednesday, December 26th
    • 11:30 – 1:30 p.m. Plantation kayak paddle. We’ll tour the basin rimmed by five colonial plantations. It’s a beautiful, relaxing introduction to this special place. $50 We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
    • 12:00 p.m. Lunch at Palmyra Barn. $20
    • 3:00 p.m. Plantation walk about with hot chocolate at The Retreat
    • 5:00 p.m. Overnight guests enjoy a Lovely Woods Walk to Sunset Reach for wine with a breath taking sunset view. Hay truck ride back home.
    • 6:30 p.m. Plantation dinner. $50
    • 7:30 p.m. Movies at the Retreat

    Thursday, December 27th
    • 10:00 a.m. Live Oaking: Morning forest walk along the shore tells how the live oak saved our young democracy.
    • Noon – 2:30 p.m. Kayak trip to Big Sky Hammock and its 360 degree view of rivers, marshes and tree fringed upland. Picnic. Then hay ride to Smugglers Cove Trail for a river walk home. $65. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
    • 4:30 p.m. Introduction to plantation life on Springfield Plantation, the oldest Georgia plantation owned continuously, intact, by the original family to whom it was granted by King George II of England in 1755.
    • 5:30 p.m. Guest Reception at Live Oak Hall.
    • 6:30 p.m. Small plate dinner at Live Oak Hall. $20. Movie Night.

    Friday, December 28th
    • 10:00 – Noon Hike where wild horses roamed when we visit Wild Horse and Cactus Hammocks. Waterproof shoes are a good idea. Great photo ops. $7.50
    • 12:30 p.m. After we explore, the hay truck will take us to Palmyra Barn for a light lunch. $20.
    • 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Kayak tour of the basin demonstrates why everyone loves the coast and finds it gorgeous. $50 We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.
      --Or-- Visit local historic sites including the award-winning Seabrook Village and the Ripley Farm, both on the Georgia and National Registers of Historic Places. $10 contribution to non-profit museum.
    • 5:00 p.m. Wine reception on the bluff
    • 6:00 p.m. Low Country Boil at the fire pit outdoors followed by ghost story telling and S’mores. $50
    • 7:30 p.m. Games and movies at the Retreat

    Saturday, December 29th
    • 10:00 a.m. Plantation walk about visits Springfield Plantation’s historic camellia gardens. You will see where new varieties come from when we visit the seed gardens planted from our own camellia seeds. Then consider nature’s natural gardens such as our gorgeous forests and the broad marsh in front of us. This is the Stevens Marsh and its conservation story is the basis for why we strive to save Georgia’s magnificent coast line and to explain to everyone why it matters. At the Retreat, we’ll review LYDAR images of past land use such as the hidden Civil War salt works. Fascinating.
    • Noon Light lunch at Live Oak Hall. $20
    • 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. We’ll take a hay ride to award-winning Seabrook Village to see its old original buildings and learn its history. $10 donation.
    • 6:00 p.m. Full plantation dinner including hoppin’ John made from our endangered Seminole peas™ and our unforgettable sweet potato soufflé with pecan crunch topping. $50

    Sunday, December 30th
    • 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Marsh exploration walk…Learn the surprising story of The Stevens Marsh. What marsh does to protect us. Its colors, sights, and changing seasons. Who and what lives in the marsh. Waterproof shoes are recommended.
    • 10:30 – Noon Archaeology at the Retreat. New discoveries and future plans. Who lived here? Try your hand at a sample dig. Research, environmental, and cultural preservation. $7.50
    • Noon Light jazz lunch at Live Oak Hall. $20
    • 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Last kayak excursion of 2018. Beautiful way to end the holidays. $50. We welcome paddlers 12 years-old and up who can swim. No experience required. All equipment & basic instruction included.

BULLETINS

  • We have bar service at Palmyra Barn and Live Oak Hall. Hours are posted in those buildings.
  • WEEKEND GUESTS, weather permitting, may enjoy free wagon rides to some of our more distant beautiful vistas. It’s bumpy and it’s fun and we stop for the best views. See posted schedule at Palmyra Barn. We also give free guided walking tours daily and guests enjoy discounts on kayak excursions.
  • Guests staying over two or more nights will receive a 10% discount on room rates during their stay. Guests also may call on us to make dinner suggestions, arrange reservations, or even book an offshore boat trip to the islands.
